Mariager - The town of roses

A walk through the cobble stone streets of Mariager is like travelling several centuries back in time. The histori of the town dates back to the early 15th century, when the bridgettine abbey was established. A boom in trade - among other tings, because og the harbour - gave Mariager status as a Market in 1592. From the harbour in Mariager You could not only cross the fjord to Stinesminde, but the harbour connected Mariager to the world.

Until 1960 large ships arrived at harbour with coal for the gasworks in Viborg. The coal was transported by railway via Handest/Faarup, - a Railway, that today is one of the most popular vintage railways. The trainstation is situated at the harbour, right next to Denmarks Saltcenter.

From here the tourboat of Mariager Fjord - The "paddle-steamer" Svanen - sails all summer to Hobro, Hadsund, Bramslev Bakker og Dania.

Mariager and the surrounding areas offer many experiences. In the town centre you will find Mariager Museum, which tells the story of the town - Here you can see an old merchant-store from around 1900. Just outside the town centre, you can find Denmarks largest bronze age burial mound "Hohøj".

A proud slow city
